Ethical Shopping?

Green Electricity

Ethical Shopping

Should there be an "ethical shopping" page on this website with links to different online shops?

The question is moot in the light of schemes which allow websites which link to online shops a commission on any purchases that are made - possibly up to 5%.

For example, The Royal British Legion links people to online shops where they can gain commission here.

The list of shops includes some of dubious ethics (no names mentioned); but others with a considerable ethical commitment, such as http://www.ethicalsuperstore.com and http://www.naturalcollection.com

The matter was discussed briefly at the CTM8 Committee meeting, and various views were expressed:

  • Some people thought that there should be links to shops, to take advantage of the commission that might be offered.
  • Others thought that we should link only to ethical, fairtrade, organic, or local shops.
  • Still others thought that we should offer "preferred" shops to visit, but also provide a link to a CTM8 "buy.at" page so that people could make up their own minds (as responsible adults).
  • And of course, we should not forget those who thought we should avoid the whole thing altogether.
